Report of July 15, 2020
The European Commission currently revises its regulation of selection of and support to so-called Trans-European Networks in the energy sector (TEN-E). Currently, the European Union still provides support to fossil natural gas infrastructure that were selected as so-called Projects of Common Interest (PCI) without sufficiently taking into account the long-term climate targets. In the research project SET-Nav, DIW Berlin and its European partners investigated the infrastructure requirements in the natural gas sector. One major result was that there are no further expansion and investment requirements in natural gas infrastructure in any of the multiple possible pathways to achieve climate neutrality in Europe. This was notified to the European Commission in a submission to the public consultation on the TEN-E revision.
