SOEP CNEF Workshop 2018 at DIW Berlin

For the first time, the DIW Berlin will host an international workshop on longitudinal data management and analysis. In contrast to our regular German SOEP-workshops, this course will be specifically devoted to comparative longitudinal and cross-country designs with the SOEP and its international sister household-panels. After an in-depth introduction to the SOEP and on general issues in longitudinal data handling, the second part of the workshop will be devoted to the US-American Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). The SOEP and the PSID have many topics and structural features in common, while the respective countries differ in many institutional and compositional features. Therefore, these two datasets are particularly fruitful for empirical cross-country analyses. This potential is additionally stipulated by the provision of several key variables in a harmonized form in the so-called cross-national equivalent files (CNEF). The third part of the course therefore will be devoted to the CNEF-project. It will give an overview on the range of harmonized variables, contributing countries and on issues of data-access. We will also discuss examples of research questions that lead to cross-country designs and limitations of the CNEF data. Additionally, the course will deal with the key analytical cross-country designs.

Day 1: Introduction to longitudinal data management and analysis on the basis of the Socio-economic Panel Study (SOEP). Lecture and hands-on sessions (Marco Giesselmann, DIW Berlin and Bielefeld University).

Day 2: Introduction to the PSID. Lecture and hands-on sessions (Paula Fomby, University of Michigan)

Day 3: Using the CNEF as basis for cross-country designs. Potentials, Problems and applications. Lecture (TBC) and hands-on sessions (Marco Giesselmann)

Registration & Requirements

This workshop aims at doctoral students, post-docs and senior researchers, who currently carry out or are planning studies with the SOEP or other household panel data. We specifically want to encourage scholars with a strong interest in the impact of country-specific characteristics on subjective or objective individual conditions to participate in the workshop. Participants shall be familiar with stata and basic quantitative methods. Admission to the workshop will be granted on a first-come basis. The participation fee will be 60 Euros. Registration will be open from June 4th, 12 a.m. (CET).

The conference will bring together DDI users and professionals from all over Europe and the world. Anyone interested in developing, applying, or using DDI is invited to attend and present.

The conference will provide presentations on a wide range of topics relating to DDI:

  • Case studies
  • Mature implementations
  • Early implementations
  • Interplay of DDI with other standards or technologies
  • Projects in early phases in which DDI is under consideration
  • Critiques of DDI
