Success in the University Admission Process in Germany: Regional Provenance Matters

[An erratum to this article can be found at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10734-009-9271-4 ]. - School education in Germany is under the responsibility of the federal states and as a consequence average grades differ widely across regions. Since school leavers apply nationwide for admission to university, regional provenance may thus matter a lot for the success probability in the admission process. Using ...

The Effects of Income Taxation on Severance Pay

Severance pay often results from a bargain between the firm and the employee to avoid or terminate a legal conflict. We theoretically investigate how income taxation affects these negotiations. Using panel data from West Germany and exploiting a change in tax law in 1999, we find that a higher income tax on severance pay reduces the probability of obtaining it and - in some specifications - also lowers ...

Subsidiary Role and Skilled Labour Effects in Small Developed Countries

This paper considers the proportion of skilled labour employed by subsidiaries in small countries in the context of the strategic role of subsidiaries. Strategic role is connected to autonomy and intra-organisational relationships and the mandates given to the subsidiary. In the paper, we draw on the literature on the strategic development of multinational corporations, and insights from inward foreign ...

The Impact of E-Procurement on the Number of Suppliers: Where to Move to?

This paper examines how electronic procurement influences firms' sourcing strategy. The relationship between the technology choice in a vertical structure is illustrated with respect to its impact on the coordination cost and the competition between suppliers. Hypotheses are tested using data from the e-Business W@tch survey. Assessing the relationship between the effect of electronic procurement on ...

Publications: German Economic Research Institutes on Track

About a decade ago the German Science Council requested a strengthening of academic research at the German economic research institutes to improve the academic foundation of policy advice - the traditional task of the institutes. Based on publications in SSCI journals, research output has since then improved remarkably in scope and quality and has involved an ever rising number of scholars within the ...

Inducing Imperfect Recall in the Lab

Our paper provides a procedure to induce imperfect recall in the laboratory, even though in the past it has been claimed that this is difficult to achieve in a controlled environment. To accomplish this task we rely on a technique called divided attention to impair subject recollection of previous choices in a version of the absent-minded driver game of Piccione and Rubinstein [Piccione, M., Rubinstein, ...

Representing GASPEC with the World Gas Model

This paper presents results of simulating a more collusive behavior of a group of natural gas producing and exporting countries, sometimes called GASPEC. We use the World Gas Model, a dynamic, strategic representation of world gas production, trade, and consumption between 2005 and 2030. In particular, we simulate a closer cooperation of the GASPEC countries when exporting pipeline gas and liquefied ...

Perspectives of the European Natural Gas Markets until 2025

We apply the EMF 23 study design to simulate the effects of the reference case and the scenarios to European natural gas supplies to 2025. We use GASMOD, a strategic several-layer model of European natural gas supply, consisting of upstream natural gas producers, traders in each consuming European country (or region), and final demand. Our model results suggest rather modest changes in the overall ...

Linking Natural Gas Markets - Is LNG Doing Its Job?

The increase in liquefied natural gas trade has accelerated the integration of previously segmented markets in North America, Europe, and Asia. This paper provides evidence on the integration of the transatlantic natural gas market; it thus complements other papers in the EMF 23 study that focus on prices and international natural gas trade. We test the theoretical proposition that in integrating markets ...
