Hermann Buslei studied economics at the universities of Munich, Cologne and Bonn. After graduating (Diplom-Volkswirt), he worked as a research associate at empirica, Bonn, a private research and consulting institute (Jan. 1991-Aug. 1994). He interrupted this work for a study with Prof. Konrad Stahl, University of Mannheim, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Building and Urban Development. From September 1994 to march 2002, he held a position at the Department of Labour Economics, Human Resources, and Social Policy at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, since 2001 as a senior researcher. In April 2002, he joined the Department Public Economics at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Berlin. His main research fields are microsimulation models of the tax-benefit system, computable overlapping generations models, public pension systems, saving behaviour, and the effects of the social security system on labour supply and employment.
